2022 has been the year of the donkey. From The Banshees of Inisherin's true lead, Jenny, to that unspeakable scene in Triangle of Sadness, this award season is seeing a supreme reign of donkeys for the first time since Shrek. The ultimate donkey film, however, is Jerzy Skolimowski's EO, an epic odyssey almost exclusively starring a donkey.
Nominated for Best International Feature Film at this year's Academy Awards, EOis a sweetly strange must-watch guaranteed to make you cry and laugh all at the same time. If you're ready to stream one of the most unique films in this year's Oscars line-up, here's everything you need to know.
EOis debut on The Criterion ChannelFeb. 21. The film will also be available to rent or purchase on Amazon, Apple, and Vudu.
EOfollows the epic adventure of a lone donkey named, well, EO. After being removed from a traveling circus, EO starts wandering across the Polish and Italian countryside. He encounters a whole array of people, from priests to soccer teams, who are either benevolently kind or begrudgingly cruel.
EOis a smartly strange tale about humanity as much as it is about our four-legged friend. With gorgeous cinematography courtesy of Michael Dymek, and an orchestral score by Pawel Mykietyn, the film is a moving experience on all ends.
Mashable's Belen Edwards proclaimed EOas one of the "must-see" films out of The New York Film Festival. She writes "EO[is] guaranteed to be one of the strangest yet most moving films you'll see out of NYFF this year."
"The film puts us squarely in EO's shoes (or hooves?) with gorgeous cinematography and an appropriately ambling plot. As cute as EO and some of his adventures are, EO does not shy away from violence towards its lead, making for a film that is as brutal and melancholy as it is engrossing and, occasionally, sweet."
