Here's a fun reality in Donald Trump's America: the new crown jewel of our talk show circuit is painter, president and poncho enthusiast George W. Bush.

Yes, as Trump subjects the country to his vast, festering ego, some people are noticing that Bush, who's on the road promoting his new art book Portraits of Courage: A Commander in Chief’s Tribute to America’s Warriors, suddenly seems kind of ... endearing? Not because of anything he's done, necessarily, but because of good old contrast.

Thanks, contrast!

For instance, there's 43's nice friendship with Michelle Obama. "She kind of likes my sense of humor. Anybody who likes my sense of humor, I immediately like,” Bush told Peopleon Thursday.

What a nice thing to say, we think, as Trump's exhausting tweets about "hit jobs" drift across our weary minds.

Bush also appeared on Thursday's episode of Jimmy Kimmel Live, telling Kimmel that Will Ferrell's Bush impression didn't bug him at all. He also said that while in office, he did not take part in one of Trump's favorite pastimes -- watching television so that he could later yell about it on the internet.

Sensible, we whisper.

Finally, the pièce de résistance: Bush's appearance on Ellen, where he took the media's side against the president.

"The nation needs a free and independent press, and the reason why is that power can be very corrupting and we need a press corps to hold politicians to account, including me," said Bush. "And yeah, I didn’t like it sometimes when people said things, you know, about me, but you know, that’s the job."

Sounds like something a liberal would say! Oh... oh, god.

Anyway, the theme of 2017 so far is "wow, reality is distorted." But at least now George W. Bush knows how to put on a rain poncho.

Remember when he started the war in Iraq?
