Moonlight took home best motion picture drama Sunday at the Golden Globes, the last honor of the night and a big sigh of relief for its fans -- many of them critics -- after being shut out of five other categories.
Berry Jenkins’ coming-of-age drama follows Chiron -- played by Alex R. Hibbard, Ashton Sanders and Trevante Rhodes at different points in the character's lives -- as he navigates the drug-plagued streets of Miami.
Mahershala Ali, Naomie Harris and Janelle Monae also star in the film, which has been lauded for its bold meditation on boyhood, growth and sexuality.
The film, an adaptation of the play Moonlight Black Boys Look Blueby Tarell Alvin McCraney, beat fellow nominees Hell or High Water, Lion, Manchester by the Sea and Hacksaw Ridge.
Jenkins thanked his mom, distributor A24, Miami, New Orleans and "everyone on Twitter."
"If you have seen this film and told a friend all I say is please tell a friend tell a friend tell a friend," Jenkins added. "Much love."
Many were happy the film won at least one award, after La La Land dominated the night with seven wins -- a new Golden Globes record.
