UPDATE: April 22, 2020, 4:25 p.m. EDTA Microsoft spokesperson responded to our request for confirmation about the Series X logo: "As we develop new products and services, we periodically file trademarks that may contribute to their future. That said, trademark filings are not indicative of final imagery. We have nothing further at this time."
The original story is below.
Not only does the upcoming Xbox Series X console depart from previous consoles in terms of size and shape, it also appears to be coming with a brand new logo.
Microsoft filed a trademark application on April 16 to register a new Series X logo, which was spotted by the Xbox Series X subreddit Tuesday. The logo, which is being registered for all possible uses imaginable, has the word Series written out vertically next to a large X that looks quite a bit different from the circular Xbox X logo we've been accustomed to since the Xbox 360 launched in 2005.
While the more circular Xbox X logo is still seen on the Xbox Series X console and controller photos we've seen, this new logo could appear in place of the old one on promotional material, merchandise, physical video game cases, and all kinds of other places.
This stark, straight new X doesn't appear in any promotional videos or materials for the Xbox Series X yet, but it wouldn't be surprising to see this popping up more and more as the year goes on and we get closer to the expected release window of holiday 2020.
SEE ALSO:Getting into gaming? Where to score deals on Xbox games, consoles, more. The new logo seems to fit this new console. While previous consoles in the Xbox family all fit a pretty similar pattern (slimmer and longer), the Series X will be a tall monolith with a square width and length. This new look deserves a new logo.
While the trademark application seems to make this pretty official, nothing is certain until Microsoft announces it itself. Microsoft did not immediately respond to our request for confirmation that this is the official Xbox Series X logo.
