阿根廷對荷蘭一戰爆發本屆最激烈的衝突 ，賽後梅西餘怒未消 ，起初外媒報導韋格霍斯特靠近梅西的時候 ，其實他是要向梅西致意 ，想索取他的上衣。梅西毫不客氣叫他滾開 ，還罵他笨蛋 。不過梅西故意用西語來罵而不是用英語，韋格霍斯特聽不懂，並未爆發更多爭吵。
梅西這次爆氣差點惹來更大的麻煩 ，他賽後開砲批評裁判 ，觸犯了FIFA的大忌 ，有人擔憂會影響他的世足4強賽事（FIFA目前沒要罰他 ，預計隻會對球團罰款）。梅西曾在2017年辱罵一位巴西籍助理裁判而遭禁賽4場與罰款 ，這是相當重的處分，導致他缺席世足資格賽 。
