It sounds like Windows is being annoying for some folks.

Microsoft's PC operating system is apparently refusing to apply software updates properly for some users, as spotted by Windows Latest. Users on Reddit have complained that clicking "Update and shut down" whenever a software update is ready to roll instead restarts the PC or, in one complaint registered back in May, simply dumps the user back to the desktop. There doesn't appear to be a definitive fix for the issue.

According to Windows Latest and Reddit, this is affecting at least Windows 10 and 11 users, though only some of them. This is a problem because folks generally want their PCs to shut down when they click a button that says "shut down."

If the PC unexpectedly restarts instead, the owner might accidentally leave it running for far longer than intended. That's not a huge issue for desktop PCs, but for laptops, battery life obviously becomes a problem.
