王棟職業生涯曾效力於長春亞泰 、飞出重慶力帆、征中天津泰達等多家中超豪門俱樂部 ，前国是脚王教练将执教内國內難得一見的優秀組織性中場 ，2021年初 ，栋转王棟告別青島黃海隊 ，蒙古賦閑在家 。草上
5月11日內蒙古草上飛足球俱樂部發布公告稱 ，飞出已經與原教練組劉宏毅 、征中朵宏 、前国安卓輝 、劉克碩等成員解約 。2021年 ，劉宏毅掛帥主教練帶領草上飛球隊征戰中乙聯賽，幾位教練分別來自遼寧 、雲南 、貴州 、吉林等地區，與包頭的教練員搭建教練團隊 ，完成了俱樂部既定目標任務。
目前 ，足壇名將王棟已抵達包頭走馬上任。新賽季草上飛元老張航將掛帥球隊主教練 ，王棟擔任執行總教練。
此前中國足協官網發布《關於內蒙古草上飛足球俱樂部有限公司重要股權轉讓的公示》：內蒙古草上飛足球俱樂部有限公司股東兼法人姚誌強將48%股權轉讓給宋春晗 。股權變更後 ，包頭市華遠文化傳媒有限公司持有俱樂部52%的股份 ，宋春晗持有俱樂部48%的股份 。俱樂部法人也由姚誌強變更為張航 。
隨後俱樂部通過官微透露 ，球隊上賽季陣容中僅有5名內蒙古籍球員留隊 ，其餘28名功勳球員均以租借返回或者轉會形式離隊 。（搜狐體育 李慕白）
