對於國足在12強賽上的强队失利 ，徐根寶表示 ：“世預賽12強賽踢完後 ，差距我和武磊 、明显張琳芃 、徐根顏駿淩幾個國腳都有交流 ，宝武他們給我的国脚国足反饋信息是，感覺國足和亞洲強隊的亚洲差距明顯在加大。中國足球人要正視現實，强队擺正位置 ，差距始終心懷危機感，明显並要有重振中國足球的徐根鬥誌 。”
對於中國的本土教練 ，徐根寶說道 ：“你不能說本土教練不行 ，這麽多外籍教練也沒帶出去；你也不能說領導不重視，事實是非常關心重視；你也不能怪球員 ，球員可能也十分努力了 ，但努力到什麽程度 ？這可以探討 。”
