按照種子隊次序排序 ，歐冠36隊將會被分為1號種子到第36號種子 。在瑞士製聯賽結束後 ，排名前8的球隊直接晉級淘汰賽 。
相比目前賽製 ，歐冠改製後將多出4支參賽球隊 。這4個名額如何分配 ？首先 ，會有一個名額分配給歐足聯排名第五的聯賽的第四名 ，目前法甲在歐足聯聯賽排行榜上排名第五 。另外三個名額 ，歐足聯則會通過近5個賽季球隊歐戰表現來進行分配。這有利於那些近年來歐戰表現出色 ，但在本國聯賽中沒能拿到歐冠名額的球隊。
