South Bend mayor and presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg officiated a last-minute city hall wedding between two constituents on Monday. The reason for their hurry? Oh, you know, they had a C-section appointment in 45 minutes.
"After going out into the hall to use the restroom, I ran into a young couple coming out of the elevator, saying I was just the person they were there to see," Buttigieg wrote in a Facebook post. "In my mind I saw the rare few minutes of free time I had left vanishing, and without meaning to be discouraging, tried to hint that I did not have a lot of time for unplanned meetings."
But when the couple explained their situation and asked him to officiate, Mayor Pete happily obliged. "Obviously there's only one answer to that question," he wrote. (As you might expect, the Facebook post is almost unbearably wholesome.)
Buttigieg rallied a group of staffers to serve as witnesses. The couple didn't have rings yet, so they found some ribbon to use as a stand-in.
Later that day, the newlyweds sent Buttigieg a photo of their newborn daughter, Jade.
"Congratulations to the newlyweds and new parents, and welcome, Jade, to this unlikely and lovely world!" Buttigieg wrote.
We would like the baby to meet Mayor Pete's dogs so that they can take a photo together. Thank you.
